Christmas traditions and rites of Ukrainians

Christmas traditions and rites of Ukrainians

Christmas is a beautiful holiday full of customs and traditions, which is celebrated in Ukraine on a grand scale.
Since ancient times, the Church has counted the celebration of Christmas before the greatest event – the birth of Jesus Christ. Believers honor this holiday and try to observe all the customs and traditions that have been formed for centuries. But in Ukraine, even people who are not very religious like the Christmas period and do not mind immersing themselves in the appropriate atmosphere.
The history of the celebration on the eve of Christmas goes back to the first centuries of Christianity. Christmas traditions have been passed down from generation to generation. Christmas is considered a family holiday and is traditionally celebrated in the family circle. It can be said that the period of preparation for Christmas is a God-blessed time to forget old grudges, to apologize to those we may have offended, to thank those who have done us good or simply been by our side during this year. In the evening, solemn religious services begin in the temples, reminding of the great event that began the countdown to the new era.

Preparation for Holy evening.Ukraine has been preparing for Christmas since the summer. During the harvest, the first, and in some localities, the last sheaf of grain (rye or wheat) was left unthreshed. A few stalks of other cereals were also added to it and tied with one, two, or sometimes three oars. This sheaf was brought into the house on Christmas Eve.

Festive dinner dishes.To celebrate Christmas Eve and Christmas, many types of bread were baked, which had different names (korun, krachun, kraichun, kerechun, knysh, kalach, strutslia and just bread) and shapes, depending on the region, and were baked from different flours, could be unleavened or seasoned (it was not consumed during dinner, but simply put on the table).
The tradition of bringing grandfather and preparing the table. The next step is the tradition of introducing the grandfather. The master, taking off his hat and crossing himself, took the grandfather and a bundle of hay, and the son – two bundles. At the same time, they shook the hay, and the father reprimanded: “Let the hay shake, let it feed the lean. May it be gentle for the souls, may it be gentle for the Holy Child and the thin woman to lie on the hay!”. They entered the house and the father said the following words: “The holidays are coming!”. – “The holidays have come!” – answered the son after the father. “We respect and ask grandfather and you to visit the Lord!” – replied the mother.
Christmas star. When the first star appeared in the sky, even then the family could sit down to the table after a day of strict fasting, during which no one was allowed to eat, except the little children, who were given a little boiled potato. However, before sitting down, everyone blew on the place on the bench so as not to suffocate the souls that were believed to come to the house on Christmas Eve.
Ukrainians have long been preparing very carefully for Holy Evening and Christmas. People believed that these days are the beginning of a new business year. Therefore, on the eve of Christmas, it was customary to perform a number of mandatory rites, which, according to belief, should ensure happiness, peace and wealth for the whole family. These rites have been passed down from generation to generation for so long that many have forgotten their meaning.
In some areas of the Western part of Ukraine, it was customary to wash in a vessel with pennies. “Someone did it in order to have money like water, someone – to be healthy like money,” says the researcher. The pennies that were thrown into the water were later given to the smallest of the children. There were also beliefs that bathing in money was a sin. Because money is evil. On Christmas Eve, it was also a tradition to smoke the house and consecrate it with holy water. Also, holy water was served on the table, which had to be drunk before dinner.
In the system of Christmas customs, there are a number of fortune-telling, which gave an opportunity to look into the future. “In fact, fortune-telling was done not only on Andrii or Melanka, but also on Holy Evening. They threw a spoon with a corner to the ceiling and if the grain did not fall, then the harvest would be good. If the kutya falls on the side, it’s bad.

Today they often like to joke that if the carolers are walking, people turn off the lights in the house. Only people know whether it is true or a joke. But it is interesting that once on the contrary – carolers were invited in all kinds of ways to come and sing carols: “If many carolers came to the house during the holidays, they were proud of it. If carolers for certain reasons bypassed someone’s house, it was considered a great shame and shame. And the whole village was buzzing about it for another six months.”

Skhidnytsia thermal waters

Skhidnytsia thermal waters

Skhidnytsia is a popular resort in the Lviv region, where people from all over go to improve their health by drinking healing water. The urban-type settlement became a bilneoological resort in 1976, but the amazing properties of local mineral waters have been known for a long time.

Mineral water Skhidnytska “Naftusia” – 38 sources, 17 boreholes, more than 25 sources are unexplored. The territory of the springs is 8 square kilometers. Mineral water resources are 80-100 cubic meters per day. The location of Skhidnytsia is in the Oriv region of the Skolivsky Carpathians, and therefore Naftusia is found together with oil in Skhidnytsia. Mineral water is formed in the bowels of the earth, and in combination with organic substances and microelements form an element of its healing power. “Naftusi” phenomenon: – significantly increases excretion from the human body; – restore metabolic disorders; – effectively affects the choleretic function of the liver; – effectively affects the excretory function of the kidneys; – affects the secretory and evacuation function of the stomach; – reproduce the regeneration of cells in the body. The healing properties of “Naftusa” are sometimes much more effective than medical preparations! “Naftusia” successfully treats diseases of the liver, kidneys, diathesis, stomach, diabetes, and also removes radionuclides and waste from the body.

According to mineralization and chemical composition, Skhidnytsia mineral waters are divided into:

  • Weakly mineralized – with an increased content of organic compounds (sources No. 1, 3, 26); – with pronounced choleretic effect (sources No. 5,8,9,10,25,1c,18c)
  • Weakly mineralized – with iron content (sources No. 13,15)
  • Moderately mineralized, hydrogen carbonate and chloride – sodium hydrogen carbonate (No. 2c) and sodium chloride

The first mention of Skhidnitsa dates back to the 14th century. In ancient times, the village was called Zolota Banya, according to researchers, from the saltworks that worked in the village. The modern name, according to one of the hypotheses, is connected with the name of the Skhidnychanka river, which cuts through the village. During its existence, Skhidnytsia experienced many dramatic events – wars and epidemics, devastating Tatar attacks and natural disasters, belonged to Poland, Austria-Hungary, and experienced the historical and political conflicts of the Soviet period. European fame came to Skhidnytsia in the middle of the 19th century with the discovery of oil and ozokerite deposits. And in just a few decades, the village took a leading place in oil production in Galicia. The countdown of the second star time began in the 50s of the 20th century, when the discoverer of the Skhidnytskyi mineral water deposit, teacher and researcher Omelyan Stotskyi began an ascetic struggle for the recognition of the Skhidnytsky springs as therapeutic mineral waters, which was crowned with success only in the 70s, when all 38 discovered source scholars were finally recognized at the state level.

  • Spring №1 (forest area, near the Golden Fleece Villa) This bicarbonate-sodium-calcium water treats urolithiasis, chronic pyelonephritis and pyelocystitis, as well as diseases of the biliary system.
  • Spring № 1-c (Zarichna St., near the “Three Sons” hotel complex) Water with a high content of organic substances. It is prescribed for diseases of the liver, urinary tract, pancreatitis, suppresses inflammatory processes in the body and helps wash out kidney stones and sand.
  • Spring № 2-c (T.Shevchenko St., near the bus station) Hydrocarbonate-sodium water of medium mineralization (“Borjomi” type composition) has a positive effect on the restoration of the acid-alkaline balance and helps to optimize the acid-forming function of the gastric glands. It is most effective for gastritis with increased acidity, chronic colitis, pancreatitis, and peptic ulcers.
  • Spring № 3 (forest area at the entrance from Boryslav) Weakly acidic hydrocarbonate-calcium water, characterized by an increased content of useful trace elements and the smell of hydrogen sulfide. It has diuretic and anti-inflammatory effects, restores kidney function and improves blood circulation.
  • Springs № 8, 9, 10 (water fountain at the beginning of T. Shevchenko St.) Weakly mineralized hydrocarbonate-calcium waters with a high content of manganese, iron, silicic acid. Effective in the treatment of diseases of the liver, biliary tract, as well as pathologies of the urinary tract and kidneys.
  • Spring № 13 (near the Three Sons hotel complex) With the help of this weakly mineralized hydrocarbonate-calcium water with a high iron content, the secretory function of the gastric glands can be improved. Water also accelerates the formation of erythrocytes in the blood, increases the level of hemoglobin, and removes radionuclides from the body. It is recommended for the treatment of liver diseases, chronic gastritis, iron deficiency anemia, radiation sickness.
  • Spring № 15 (a forest area near the “Hutsulka” sanatorium) Water saturated with iron, carbon dioxide and manganese is prescribed for the treatment of chronic stomach diseases and the removal of radionuclides from the body.
  • Spring № 18 (Kotlyarevsky Street near the Santa Maria hotel) This bicarbonate-sulfate-sodium water has an effective choleretic effect. It is recommended for diseases of the liver, kidneys, biliary system.
  • Springs № 25, 26 (forest zone near the “Zeleny Bir” medical and health center) Weakly mineralized hydrocarbonate-sulfate-calcium-magnesium waters. Kidney diseases, chronic hepatitis are treated with their help. Recommended for recovery of the body after Botkin’s disease.

Treatment in Skhidnytsia is carried out in numerous complexes with their own treatment bases, most institutions have mineral water pumps. Also, all sanatorium-resort facilities offer accommodation with diet food, examinations by a staff doctor and mostly good conditions for diagnostics.

Interesting facts about Skhidnytsia

Interesting facts about Skhidnytsia

Skhidnytsia is a small and relatively young balneological resort of Ukraine, since it has been operating as a resort only for the last 40 years.

Skhidnytsia is located in a valley on the northeastern slope of the Carpathians, 25 km from the Truskavets resort at an altitude of 500-600 meters above sea level.

Rest in Skhidnytsia is a good choice for those who are tired of city noise and just want to relax from everything. Skhidnytsia will help you feel healthy and happy. The cleanest air, the silence of a mountain village in the Carpathians and healing mineral waters – this is why people come to us from all over the world.

Recently, new ultra-modern complexes have been actively appearing in Skhidnytsia – such as modern spa hotels of the European level of 3-4 stars, which will satisfy the most demanding tourists (TAOR Karpaty Resort & Spa****, Osonnia Karpat, Kyivska Rus, Santa Maria, DiAnna , Three Sons and Daughter, Krona Hotel and Spa, Respect, Tustan), as well as private mini-hotels and small villas that have good infrastructure and where you can have a great vacation with your family for reasonable money.

Skhidnytsia is a real tourist pearl, surrounded by deciduous, coniferous and mixed forests, rich in resource reserves, mineral water sources and incredibly beautiful species.

Due to its unique similarity with alpine landscapes, the town is comfortably located in the foothills of the Carpathians, often called “Ukrainian Switzerland”.

Probably, Skhidnytsia would have remained only a picturesque village, and not a famous resort in the Carpathians, if in 1975 the teacher, engineer and researcher Omelyan Stotskyi (1894-1979) had not discovered large reserves of mineral water here. Analyzing the biography of Oleksandrovych Omelyan (and it is described in sufficient detail in the Ukrainian Wikipedia), we can conclude that the discovery of the field in Skhidnytsia was natural by him. In many sources, the story of the discovery sounds as if some local pensioner accidentally found a source of healing water somewhere in the garden.
Somehow it is forgotten that Omelyan Stotsky worked for a long time in the industrial development of oil fields, was the director and chief engineer of a gasoline plant, defended his master’s thesis in German philology, was an excellent musician and teacher. Making considerable efforts, Omelyan Stotskyi managed to collect the necessary evidence regarding the identity of Skhidnytsia water with the already known Truskavets Naftusa.

Guests of Skhidnytsia can have fun with walks, mushroom and berry picking, trout fishing and excursions.

In the vicinity of Skhidnytsia is the National Nature Park “Skolivski Beskydy”, in which areas of virgin beech and standard spruce and fir forests have been preserved, as well as many plant species from the Red Book of Ukraine.

Lovers of history and antiquities can visit the Skhidnytsia folk life museum, which is located in the school building. The museum was created by the efforts of local residents who collected exhibits related to the history of the region.

Interested tourists can take a walk to the “Tustan” nature reserve, which is named after the remains of a fortress built in the early Middle Ages.

Not far from Skhidnytsia (55 km) in the village of Medenichi is the Limpopo Zoo, which will be interesting for adults and children to visit. About 400 species of animals, collected from all corners of our planet, live in the zoo. The zoo has a playground and children’s attractions.

Quiet rest in the Carpathians

Quiet rest in the Carpathians

The leaves are starting to change their shades of green to fiery crimson and orange, and the air is getting clearer! Apparently, this means that autumn is on the way, and with it – exciting trips to the Carpathians. You won’t want to miss these scenic views, nature trails, and cozy weekend ideas. Whether you want a romantic break or an escape to unspoiled nature, this autumn weekend in the Carpathian region has you covered. Gaze at the gorgeous fall foliage, pick mushrooms and berries, and sample updated menus at the region’s restaurants, the best of fall right here.

Now is the most ideal period for recreation in the Carpathian region, because June is the rainiest month in the Carpathians, and it is rare to plan a trip to the mountains in this month without getting caught in torrential rain. But October is the driest period in the Carpathians, which makes it the best time to go to the mountains alone or with the family! Autumn is the perfect time for a relaxing holiday in the Carpathians.

Tourists who have repeatedly visited this region choose the autumn period for themselves. It is at this time that it is quiet and calm and a fairly stable weather is established, which can last for several days. In the summer, red rue, rhododendrons, daffodils and other flowers bloom in the mountains. In September, it is no longer there, but there are many berries: blueberries, lingonberries and many others. Also, our region is rich in varieties of mushrooms. Therefore, your quiet rest smoothly turns into a quiet hunt!

Rent a house, cottage or just book a hotel room with a view of the mountains! During this period, nature begins to dress in yellow, velvet, bright and crimson colors, which carries a special atmosphere of relaxation and rest. For the autumn Carpathians, “pacification” is characteristic, and for the guests, “unity” with nature!

If you want to combine activities during your vacation, you can diversify your vacation in the Carpathians with hikes, excursions, and dedicate a few days of your vacation to nature contemplation and slow walks. Also, try going on an educational tour or going on a hike, go horseback riding, or drive quad bikes along the trails of the autumn mountains. In the Carpathians, there is a huge selection of simple one-day hikes, when you do not need to climb a high mountain, but instead – take a leisurely walk surrounded by nature and see a lot of new things.

Silent hunting is one of the favorite activities in autumn. What could be better than a leisurely walk through a quiet forest. Especially when you return home with a full basket of fragrant fresh mushrooms. Usually, the two months with the highest yields are September and October. With the onset of frost, in November, there are few mushrooms. Although in the Carpathians, even until the first days of December, white mushrooms are found in grass covered with frost. And mushroom pickers have their own beliefs, you should always go for mushrooms when there is a new moon in the sky. But where exactly you should go to collect a basket full of forest trophies – no mushroom picker will tell you. Anyone who is fond of mushrooms and has been going to the forest for years makes such a “treasure map” for himself and does not give out his “mushroom points” just like that. There are many forests rich in mushrooms in the Lviv Region. But the mushroom picker is convinced: there is no specific place.

Thermal and mineral waters of Truskavets

The human body consists of 70% water – this fact has long been known to everyone. If we lose from 6 to 8% of liquid, then our body involuntarily falls into a state of semi-unconsciousness, and if the loss of water in the body exceeds 12%, then the thick blood is unable to pass through the blood vessels, as a result of which death occurs. It is not for nothing that there is a statement that life is movement, and water is constantly in motion. An ecologically clean town in Western Ukraine – Truskavets has in its arsenal not only mountain air and a favorable climate of green areas, but also a variety of mineral waters. Truskavets surprises many domestic and foreign scientists with a large number of healing mineral water sources, there are more than 25 of them in the resort town. Among the sources of healing water, there are such cute names of female names as “Maria”, “Sofia”, “Anna”, “Kateryna”, “Barbara” “, but also quite funny – “Naftusya”, “Yuzya”, “Bronislava” and others. At first, the resort town developed as an oil production village. But even in the distant 19th century, the approaches to the study of this or that phenomenon differed little – they looked for one thing, but found something completely different. In 1810, in the then still village of Truskavets, instead of oil, mineral water began to flow from a fountain. But not just water, but healing! The first scientific research conducted on the healing properties of Truskavets mineral waters was conducted by the Lviv scientist Teodor Torosevich in 1835. The chemist-pharmacist classified the sources, determined their chemical composition, explained which source helps with which diseases, which waters and how to take them.

What is the benefit of Naftusya mineral water in Truskavets?

Its bicarbonate composition with a high content of calcium and magnesium has a hypotonic effect on the body. “Naftusya” belongs to weakly mineralized waters, contains organic substances of petroleum origin. It is used directly on the spot (loses useful properties when in contact with air).

Properties of Naftusya mineral water:

  • Minimizes lithogenicity of bile and urine. Regular intake as a medicinal drink reduces the tendency to stones, sand in the bile and urinary system.
  • Normalizes the work of the liver, organs of the gastrointestinal tract.
  • Removes slags, radionuclides, products that negatively affect metabolism from the body. It is indicated for diseases associated with metabolic disorders (obesity, diabetes, gout).
  • Removes inflammatory processes in the intestines, liver, and genitourinary system.
    It has a beneficial effect on increasing immunity (activates the work of endocrine glands).

Maria mineral water in Truskavets

This is a healing composition for the treatment of inflammatory processes of the digestive organs and intestinal disorders. Chloride-sulfate water with a high sodium content is prescribed for diabetes, liver diseases, pancreatitis and diseases of the gastrointestinal tract.

Properties of Mary’s mineral water:

  • regulates gastric secretion;
  • has a choleretic effect;
  • improves intestinal motility;
  • reduces pain in diarrhea, enterocolitis (relieves spasms and inflammation);
  • lowers cholesterol in bile (prevents the formation of gallstones).
Sofia mineral water in Truskavets

One of the most mineralized drinking chloride-sulfate-sodium compositions (10g / 1l). It is used to treat diseases of the gastrointestinal tract: gastritis with a sharply reduced secretory function of the stomach, colitis, constipation. Properties of Sofia mineral water:

  • normalization of motility of the stomach and intestines;
  • stimulation of gastric secretion;
  • increased acidity;
  • improvement of metabolism.
NON-POTABLE WATERS OF BALNEOLOGICAL RESORTS
  • Bronislav mineral water in Truskavets. The chloride-sodium compound is used for external use and for effective gargling in tonsillitis and pharyngitis. Recommended for the prevention of these diseases. It is served in a heated form in pump stations.
  • Water Yuzya Truskavets transforms from a health resort into a center of effective cosmetology procedures. Water with a slightly noticeable smell of hydrogen sulfide, identical to glycerin, contains softening components. Application in the form of daily washing with ice “rejuvenating” water has a beneficial effect on the condition of the skin of the face. Already after several procedures, the skin will become soft, moisturized, elastic and resilient.

Water from the mineral springs of Truskavets is unique in its composition: it has a high content of organic substances of petroleum origin. It is recommended to use this water in a pump, because organic substances quickly break down when in contact with air. “Naftusya” is successfully used for diseases of the kidneys, gall bladder, liver, pancreas, it removes radionuclides, normalizes blood sugar and thus affects the general condition of the body and immunity.

Tanks in Truskavets. Healing vats of the: where to look?

Tanks in Truskavets. Healing vats of the: where to look?

Visiting the chan-ban is becoming more and more popular. In many ways, the effect of visiting a chan-sauna is similar to the effect of ordinary bath procedures. After all, the basis of the process remains the alternation of high and low temperatures. But still, this method is the most different from other methods of steaming.

The procedure for visiting a chan-sauna is quite simple for fans of steam baths. Be sure to take a shower before the session. Then immerse yourself in the water and enjoy the union with nature and communication with loved ones or friends (because an ordinary vat accommodates 6 – 8 people). As soon as you get too hot, plunge into cold water, after which you can return to the warm water. The average duration of the session is 1 – 2 hours.

The body is warmed not by steam or heated air, but by hot water, the temperature of which gradually rises in a cast-iron bowl. Due to its physical properties, cast iron serves as the starting material – it takes a long time to heat up, but it also takes a long time to cool down. The temperature of the tank is usually 35 – 42 ºC. A vat is heated with the help of a fire, into which firewood is thrown. A special feature of a chan-bath is that it is usually located in the fresh air and provides an opportunity to combine bathing and enjoying the beauty of nature. The healing properties of the procedure are given by the use of water from mineral springs or by filling the vat during bathing with decoctions of medicinal herbs. There are various recipes for preparing healing vats: with medicinal herbs (mint, cherry, sage, nettle, rosemary and others); with coniferous extract; with rose petals; with wild berries. Using a steam bath improves blood circulation, calms the nervous system, helps to get rid of insomnia, rejuvenates the body, and strengthens the immune system.

A hot tub in the Carpathians is something that no vacation in the Carpathians can do without today. After all, a thermal bath is not only pleasant, but also useful. Various herbs or essential oils can be added to the tank, the aroma of which has a positive effect on the body as a whole, helps to relax and calm down after a stressful day. A large metal cauldron, which can accommodate 4-5 people, is located in a cozy corner under the open sky. Guests can choose for themselves an unforgettable relaxing holiday in the Carpathians, in the fresh air with an incredible view of the mountains. The chan is heated with firewood in a closed oven from below and the guests, in this way, seem to be cooking in a giant cauldron. Aromatic oils or Carpathian herbs are added to the purified and filtered mountain water at the guests’ request. Nearby is a tub of cold water, in which you can immerse yourself completely or pour yourself over from a mug (the principle of contrasting bathing, as in a bath). The dressing room is warm, there are sheets, towels, slippers, everything you need for a comfortable rest.

Chan is not only steaming, it is the improvement of our body, and here we must do everything correctly and follow the necessary rules.

Steaming in a tank has a rejuvenating effect on the body, has a positive effect on the general physical condition of a person, especially on the cardiovascular and nervous systems, musculoskeletal system and brings many other benefits. If there are no contraindications due to the state of health, then you can climb into the tank.

What you need to know about chan, contraindications

If you have contraindications to steaming, you should know about it yourself. Those who do not tolerate a hot bath may be the same with a vat, but for example there are many people who are intolerant to a bath, sauna or sauna, and a vat is completely comfortably tolerated. The most common contraindications are cardiovascular diseases, inflammatory processes in the body and locomotor diseases. It is also possible to take into account that some vats may contain water of different degrees of mineralization, and at your request, a decoction of needles, bark, roots, twigs, leaves, oats, and various medicinal flowers and herbs can be added to the vat. If there is an individual sensitivity to a certain plant, then you can steam without a decoction. You can ask the owner of the tank about all the features.

It should be comfortable in the tank!

Such a tank should be chosen so that you can comfortably sit and lie on your back at an angle and the water covers up to the line of the heart. Briefly, the chest should be opened, without covering it with water. If the vat is narrowed to the top and has a small angle of inclination for the back, and you have to sit almost vertically with water up to your neck, this will create an additional load on the heart, then it is better to refuse such a vat and choose a more comfortable one with a good seating position in the middle of the vat.

What is it, the process of steaming in a tank?

First of all, it is recommended to remove metal jewelry before steaming, as metals have a very fast temperature transfer. We descend gradually and smoothly into the middle of the tank, take a comfortable position and start the steaming process, adjust the most comfortable water temperature. Let’s relax body and soul, enjoying the process of health steaming. You can also immerse the heart and head in hot water for a short time to normalize the temperature of the body, but this is only for those who are suitable. On average, steaming most people in a tank takes about an hour, and every 15 minutes dousing or diving in cold water.

Hardening in a tank is quite real!

The hardening procedure goes through a process of immersion in hot water and moderate steaming, after which the body must be cooled with snow or cold water. We wipe with snow if there is, in the absence of snow we switch to cold water. Cold water is placed differently for each owner, it can be either in a bucket for pouring, or next to it in a barrel, a pool, or in any container, even in a similar tank for cold water.

Steaming in a tank is a combination of useful and pleasant. It is better to try once than to see or hear a hundred times. We wish you a successful steaming and add recommended popular tanks in our region.
